Bündner Rigi, Val Lumnezia & Obersaxen

Distance: 66 km
Estimated Time: 6:00 h
Elevation Gain: 1950 m

Our route kicks off with a bang in the town of Ilanz. Right from the start, you’re faced with a demanding, steep climb on a nearly empty paved road that quickly turns into a gravel track. After around 1,000 meters of elevation gain, you’ll reach the mountain lodge Bündner Rigi – a perfect spot for a break. Here, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the famous Rhine Gorge, with a sweeping panorama stretching all the way to the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona, Ringelspitz, Calanda, and the Signina Group.

A short forest segment leads into a well-earned break – a gentle descent through the picturesque village of Morissen down to Vella. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Val Lumnezia and its surrounding peaks. Make a stop at the charming Davos Munts lake above the village of Vattiz – an ideal rest spot and, on warm days, a must for a refreshing swim!
Gravel pro tip: Dip your feet in the water, enjoy some local snacks, and recharge for the second part of your journey.

The adventure continues – and so do the gravel roads!

The second climb of the day up to Alp Nova can really push your limits – after all, you’ll already have about 2,000 meters of elevation in your legs. But this is where the true spirit of gravel riding comes alive. After a short stretch of singletrack toward Alp Stavonas and across the scenic Obersaxen plateau, you’re rewarded with one last treat: a long, exhilarating descent all the way down to the Anterior Rhine Valley. From there, a smooth riverside route brings you comfortably back to Ilanz.
